‘The one’

Was talking to my grandad today, and he asked me to explain why and what I love about Steven, and I found it so hard to actually give him an answer.
He then said ‘That’s how I felt about your nan when we were first together all those years ago, some people say they never know when they have met ‘the one’ but what I think is that when you can’t give me just one single thing that you love somebody, the fact that you love every single good and bad thing about them, then that’s when you should understand that they are the person for you.’

Project Unbreakable: Stories of Surviving Sexual Assault

“It’s time to talk about it,” is 20-year old Grace Jones’ message. “Sexual assault isn’t talked about. It’s not brought up.”

Her way of talking about rape is Project Unbreakable. Jones has a Nikon D90 DSLR camera and a desire to put the spotlight on a problem which is still too common. At high school, Grace had considered becoming a sexual assault counselor. In her last year at school, she began to take an interest in photography. “I went through a lot of guilt; photography was shallow in comparison to therapy,” she confesses. In her first year of college, Grace combined the two.

This is an installation of over 100,000 Facebook profile pictures collected to form a wallpaper, a project dealing with “the issue of data accessibility on the Internet, a topic that is gaining more and more importance and actuality, especially in our times of privacy protection and social networks.

On the one hand internet giants like Google are coming under criticism for unsolicitedly collecting any information accessible; on the other hand it is surprising how many intimacies we reveal voluntarily, especially in social networks like Facebook.

An unimaginable flood of images with self-projection as its only purpose.”

Azuma Makoto - Frozen Pine (2011)

“The artist chose to work with bonsai trees because of their Japanese origin and history of aesthetic purposes. Bonsai trees are pruned at their branches and roots to guide the plants’ growth into visually pleasing ornaments. As a result of practices similar to this, the concept of ‘nature’ is constantly changing. Azuma’s interpretation of this man-made distortion idea involves enclosing, freezing, and stretching. The steel frame around the trees represents a sort of confinement in which nature is altered. Freezing a bonsai, leaving sharp and dense icicles to hang off its branches, or suspending it in the air, tugged at every which end by metal wiring, are obvious and more literal representations of altering the natural life of the plant. The message is how man’s actions greatly influence nature.”
